The San Juan Mountains, so named by Spanish explorers in the 1700’s, were the summer hunting and fishing grounds for the Ute Native Americans for centuries.  Hunters and trappers arrived in the early 1800’s, followed by gold and silver miners in the 1870’s.

Originally known as Columbia, the name was changed to Telluride in 1878.  “Proper” historians suggest that the town was named after tellurium, a nonmetallic element often found in association with gold and silver.  I prefer the legend of the rowdy miners and outlaws heard to shout “To-Hell-You-Ride” as they approached town.  In 1889, a young outlaw began his career by holding-up the San Miguel Valley Bank in Telluride stealing $25,000.  Today, we know this man and his gang as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

By 1890, the railroad had arrived and the population swelled to over 5,000 residents.  At this time in history, Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison were locked in a battle of “electricity”.  Tesla proposed the theory of alternating current (AC) while Edison championed direct current (DC).  Just outside of Telluride, Tesla constructed an alternating current power plant for a mining operation in 1891 to prove his theory.  It worked and Edison abandoned his promotion of direct current.  The rest is world-history!

The Tomboy Mine was one of the richest gold producers in the world at the time with over $360,000,000 extracted.  At the turn-of-the-century, Telluride had more millionaires per capita then did New York City.  It all changed with the Silver Panic of 1893.  Without an economic engine, most of Telluride’s residents abandoned town over the next couple of decades.

Telluride languished and became yet another mountain hippie town.  In 1964, the core downtown area of Telluride was designated a National Historic Landmark District.  Joe Zoline, a wealthy California entrepreneur, discovered Telluride and saw the potential for a ski area. In 1972, Zoline opened the Telluride Ski Resort.  In 1978, Zoline sold it to Colorado natives Ron Allred and Jim Wells.  It was Allred and Wells that developed the potential of the Telluride Ski Resort until they sold it in 2001.

Breath-taking beauty, uncompromising skiing, a page in history, distinctive dining, boutique shopping and endless summer festivals have attracted people worldwide.  There is but one Telluride.

Telluride Bluegrass Festival

“The Annual Telluride Bluegrass coincides with the Summer Solstice and the days surrounding the full moon; the longest day of the year; the beginning of summer. It's a magical time of sun and light, when the high country of Colorado puts away its skis and grabs hiking boots, kayaks, and a low-back festival chair to take in "Bluegrass."

Telluride Blues & Brews Festival

“One of the most scenic music festivals in the country, the Telluride Blues & Brews Festival takes place every September in Telluride, Colorado, a world-famous resort town in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. The festival is a three day celebration of music and microbrews, held in Telluride Town Park, an outdoor music venue with breathtaking mountain peaks for a backdrop. By day, experience live blues, rock, funk, gospel, and soul, the best micro brews from over 50 micro breweries during Saturday's Grand Tasting, a wide variety of food and craft vendors, children's activities, and more - all on the festival grounds. By night, follow the festival as it flows into the town of Telluride and Mountain Village, with late night juke joints and after-hours jams.”

Telluride Film Festival

“Each Labor Day weekend, the tiny mountain village of Telluride, Colorado triples in size. Swells of passionate film enthusiasts flood the town for four days of total cinematic immersion, embarking on a viewing odyssey, blissfully spending entire days in flickering dark rooms. With only an appreciation of celluloid to guide them, these devotees flock to the show, year after year. Why? Blind faith. We don’t reveal the program until everyone lands in town. Yet the Telluride family trusts that a unique experience will unfold.”

Telluride Chamber Music

“The Telluride Chamber Music Festival has been bringing music to Telluride since 1973.  This year we continue to bring you chamber music as it was originally intended, up close and personal! Our festival creates a spontaneous connection between audience and musicians which lifts the human spirit.  You are invited to take a break from your busy life and enjoy one of life's gentler pleasures by hearing chamber music at its best.  Our Artistic Director, Roy Malan, is planning another great festival for our enjoyment. Roy is the concertmaster with the San Francisco Ballet.”

Telluride Jazz Celebration

“Since 1977 Telluride’s majestic perch - high in the spectacular San Juan Mountains in Southwestern Colorado -- has been the site of an annual cultural event produced by the Telluride Society for Jazz combining the finest of nature and art that ranks among the world’s most memorable music festivals. The intimate format and abundant opportunities to enjoy spectacular alpine recreational activities complement the superb music presented each year at the Telluride Jazz Celebration (TJC). Combining performances on outdoor stages during the day with theater and club shows at night, the TJC offers the best of both worlds.”

Telluride Music Fest

“The founders of Telluride Musicfest intended something different when they first opened their homes to festival goers in June 2003. Josh Aronson and Vincent and Ann Mai wanted to create a unique festival to enjoy chamber presented music in its intended form - first-class musicians performing in an intimate home environment.  The goal of Telluride Musicfest is to continue to explore the boundaries of the intimate fireplace chamber concert, incorporating new ideas as the festival unfolds.”

The intimate mountain environment of Telluride, Colorado continues to be an ideal environment for discussion and reflection.”
